The recent Rotary Book Sale was a tremendous success, raising $110,000 in sales. However, this may have been our last book sale. The City of Surrey is considering changes to the Rotary Fieldhouse that could eliminate the warehouse space our Rotary Club depends on to run these vital semi-annual events.

What’s at stake

  • Thousands of gently used books are available at our book sales, including fiction, non-fiction, children’s titles, cookbooks, and more. This popular event supported local scholarships, youth leadership programs, and Rotary’s international humanitarian efforts.

  • The Rotary club has long contributed to our community through fundraising and volunteer efforts, especially through book sales that rely on the warehouse space at the Rotary Fieldhouse.

  • That warehouse space is absolutely critical — without it, the book sale may no longer be possible. And when that happens, not just the Rotary, but many community groups will suffer

What you can do

  • Sign the petition. Your signature sends a strong message to the City of Surrey that we believe this book sale matters — to culture, to literacy, to community.

  • Spread the word. Share this petition with friends, family, neighbours. Post it on social media. Talk about it. The more voices, the stronger the case
  • Stay involved. We may call on supporters later for additional actions — such as a letter-writing campaign — to ensure decision-makers hear from all of us

  • Global News story - Wayne Baldwin, the former president of the Rotary Club of White Rock and head fundraiser for the Rotary Field House, explains how the City of Surrey's latest move ignores the spirit of the original agreement. (August 23, 2025)

Why it matters

  • These book sales are more than just sales. They connect people: young and old, readers, learners, families. Many see them as traditions.

  • Affordable access to books helps promote literacy, learning, imagination.

  • Supporting local charities and groups through the proceeds helps strengthen our whole community.

We already have over 4,400 verified signatures on the petition — that’s a powerful start. But we need many more voices.
